Eric Harvey argues that reality TV emerged in dialog with another kind of entertainment in the late 1980s that served as its foil while borrowing its techniques: gangsta rap. The answer to Cops’ (Fox) depiction of Black America was N.W.A.’s Fuck tha Police. While American media sensationalized the inner city, Hip-Hop countered the narrative as “Black America’s CNN” (Chuck D).
